White Squirrel Saddle Club

                                                                                        September, 2016

Horse Shows!! Horse Shows!!! Horse Shows!!!  For the next three weekends, there will be activity in East Fork Arena – Sunday, September 18; Sunday, September 25; and Saturday, October 1.  Each of these events should bring lots of action, and hopefully participants new to our facility.    We should spread the welcome mat, and make their stay with us an especially impressive one.  We certainly wish them well and hope they come back soon!!!

The Firing Range is in use the second and fourth Saturdays beginning in September thru the winter (9 a.m.-12 noon).  If the red flag is out, DO NOT ENTER the arena area.

A note from President Al —

The weather has finally gotten better, and now is a great time to ride that horse who is patiently waiting for you.  However, there are a lot of other things that have also been waiting–projects to finish at home and some at the saddle club.

We had a great horse show in August and also did very well with the pork burger cookout.  I would like to tip a hat to Jeff Lathrop who took off work on Friday to trim weeds at the arena and clean up for the horse show, work Saturday at the pork burger cookout, and Sunday at the horse show.  Thanks, Jeff!!

There are many who give it their all, and we never want to forget them.  Also, thanks to Pam Reid, AND HER HORSE SHOW CREW; thanks to Becky Jackman for filling in during my absence from the horse show.  Coming up, we have a SIWHS&RA show on Sunday, our meeting on Monday, and the following weekend, the IBRA show on the 25th.

As most of you may know, Deb Longoria has been hard at work on the website.  We surely thank her for her efforts.

We are looking to form a committee to work on a grant to put a roof over the arena.  If you have grant writing skills, please give me a call to help.

Gary Gaither and I were discussing the campground and having set times to camp, just like we do the trail rides, to promote some fun times.  There will be more to come on this, so stay tuned.

The WSSC is a member of the Southern Illinois Western Horse Show and Racing Association.  Laura Lathrop and I worked at their yearly charity show last weekend at the Wayne City Saddle Club.  It was very nice to see some WSSC members participating.

While we are thanking folks, let us not forget Kenny Banks who so faithfully cuts the grass EVERY week and tries to keep up with Mother Nature.  Good Job, Kenny.

So until we see you at the meeting Monday night or on the trail……..

Crazyhorse 4-H:  Crazyhorse met Sunday, September 11, 2016.  We set our “Fun Day” for October 16 at 3:00 p.m.  A trail ride, arena games and a cookout to kick off the new 4-H year is scheduled.  Helmets will be required for all children riding horses on the trail and in the arena.  Our 4-H families are encouraged to invite a friend who might be interested in joining 4-H.

All members turned in their project books and award applications for grading night.  4-H Achievement night will be in November.

Crazyhorse members attending the state fair came home with awards of excellence!! We are proud of each and every one of them; they work really hard on their projects!

We are not having a meeting the 2nd Sunday in October; some of the members are going on a Discover Chicago field trip.

If you know a child eight years old or more, let me know.  We would love to have them come and learn about 4-H.
