March 2017 Hoofprint

White Squirrel Saddle Club

                                                                                                March, 2017

Gaitway to Motion will begin Tuesday, June 6, for another season of riding for those “special needs” children.  Volunteers and horses are needed as this program is growing.  There are twenty-two children waiting for your help.  So, if you can give a few hours on a Tuesday evening to make kids happy as well as help them both physically and emotionally, please get in touch with Marti Waggoner.  If you are unsure about the program, come out and see for yourselves what it is all about.  Once you are there, you will realize that it is certainly worth a few hours of your time for those kids!!!

A note from President Al —

Many good things are starting to happen!!!  We have a clean-up set for this weekend to get the place in shape for the upcoming season of shows, trail rides and campouts.

Lloyd and I have been putting the finishing touches on the trail schedule.  So if anyone has any suggestions, please let either of us know.  We will have some campout dates at the East Fork Arena site and also in Shawnee.

Southern Illinois Western Horse Show & Racing Association cards are available at the club.  If you need some, let us know.  IBRA and NBHA shows are set; the committees are working on their respective shows.  Pam is also in negotiation with ranch rodeo people and hopes to host a couple of roping events.

As some of you know, Deb Longoria is no longer running the cook shack, but is taking care of the website for us.  If you have not been there, go check it out!  We now have over 1000 members on Facebook, and our membership is growing at every meeting.  The WSSC must be doing something right!!!

Belinda Henton has obtained dollars from the City of Olney for a sign, some plastic fence, and gravel at the trail entrance.   The sign should be done very soon; we can erect it and welcome day riders and hikers to the trails.

Let’s talk about our general meetings.  We would like to see more folks in attendance.  This year, we are trying to hold them to one hour after our meal.  The tables have been rearranged so everyone can see each other and communicate better.  At the last meeting, those attending liked the new layout and the agenda.

We are seeking individuals that could help with Gaitway to Motion by bringing horses for the kids to ride.  Some that have brought horses in the past have decided not to help this year; as we now have more kids in the program, we need more horses enrolled.  The horses need to be evaluated to see if they will tolerate the GTM program without problems.

PLEASE NOTE:  If you have a campsite and desire to keep it, we need to know if you are working or paying.  If you are paying, it is due by the end of March.  Now that the riding season is upon us, we have a waiting list of persons desiring camp spots.  Also, remember, it is your responsibility to clean up your site so lawn cutting may be done.

See you at the meeting!!

Crazyhorse 4-H met Sunday, March 12 at 2:00 p.m. at Poco Pine Lodge.  Six members were present along with one guest, three parents and two leaders.  We had our regular meeting, discussed the upcoming IGA porkburger/brat/bakesale on Saturday, April 22 from 10 – 2 or until sold out.  We will decide at our April meeting how the net proceeds will be disbursed.  Please donate a bake sale item, if you can, to help us raise more funds!

New items in the newsletter were discussed.  April 1st is the horse ownership deadline in order to show at the county fair.  April 17th will be a visual arts workshop at the Extension Office meeting room from 10 – 2.  Darby and Karlee Bissey gave their talk on horse breeds and geology, both doing a great job.

We all enjoyed refreshments brought by the Bissey’s.  Tristyn Troyer shared information about her FFA trip to Joliet for competition on Vet Science.

Next meeting:   April 9, 2:00 p.m.
